Ten years ago if you had asked someone what St Valentines Day meant to them they would probably tell you that it was no big deal. It may have been important for a florist who has to deal with the promotion or a local restaurant that offers roses with its dinner but it was never such a big hype with so much money, time and effort being spent on it.

These days St Valentines Day is such a big thing that you would have to be living on the moon not to know anything about it. As early as December, you will be surrounded by advertisements, promotions, special offers and gift ideas in newspapers, on TV, on radio, on the Internet - basically everywhere you turn. Surviving Valentine's Day is easy.

For some people all this hype is way too much and they prefer to ignore that Valentine’s Day is on its way. And many people will find it quite depressing that they see or hear so much about it everywhere, and due to circumstance they are currently single and will have no one to celebrate it with.

Contrary to popular merchant sentiment, Valentine’s Day is about love and not necessarily love among couples only.

It should also be shared and shown amongst family, friends and anyone you wish to show your love for. You can be 9 or 90 but love is something we all feel and it is something we all need in both small and big ways. It makes us feel happy and there’s definitely no point in letting the commercial aspects of Valentine’s Day ruin this feeling for you.  

The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. Saint Valentine's Day , as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. A note in the lunchbox, a beautiful flower when you walk through the door, an extra long hug and maybe a special meal with someone, this is what is important on this special day.

Whatever the reason is for you to be alone this Valentine's day, just celebrate it anyway. You certainly won't be alone in being alone so find someone who will spend the day with you. Take a positive attitude to it all and celebrate the love of those dear to you even though they may not be the cherished partner you wish you were with.

A simple “I’m thinking of you my dear friend” or “Mum, you mean so much to me” can make a considerable difference to those people who do mean the most in your life, regardless of whether you are the giver or the recipient.

So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

     According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.    

      Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France. Word is that he's no longer a saint now, but then, I have to say, where love is concerned, not many of us are!

       I strongly feel that Valentine dinners should be made special. Choose your sweetie's favorite foods and surprise him or her with a wonderful romantic meal and a special table set for two (or more). There's all kinds of luscious treats in this cookbook and food should be a real treat sometimes, we all enjoy a tasty change.

How often do we get out the best settings these days. If you have a fireplace, light a small wood fire, set a little table close by, and use your most delicate china and crystal for the meal and the wine.
